Is Your Florist Really Long Distance?

Your local florist is just a phone call away, so some think. Some unscrupulous telemarketing firms are posing as local florists, charging you higher fees and taking business away from legitimate florists in Louisville.

Here's how the deception works. A telemarketer takes out a bogus listing in the white pages of your telephone directory. The company may use your town's name in its own to make you believe it's local. or, the name of a legitimate local florist may be listed with a different local phone number. When you call, you're unknowingly forwarded to an out-of-town telemarketing operation. The Telemarketer takes your order and credit card information for payment, and forwards your order to an area florist. The telemarketer pockets a huge processing fee and a percentage of the sale as well. You don't realize you've been scammed until you get higher than expected charges from an out of town company on your credit card statement, or learn that the flowers weren't delivered as ordered, or were never delivered at all.

This same scheme is played out over and over again in our local yellow pages with companies who are not located in Louisville. These companies also collect huge processing fees and have to farm out your order to a local florist who agrees to give them a discount on the order.

Here are some tips on how to protect yourself before you place your next order.

* Ask neighbors, family, and friends for recommendations on a florist.
*Deal only with shops that list a street address and their phone number.
*Ask the florist to itemize the charges.
*Ask the florist for directions to the shop

If the florist hesitates or refuses to give you their local address or itemize the charges for you this is a red flag and take your business elsewhere.

We have been doing a lot of work around the flower shop this summer. We started with the new roof and then painted the building. You know how it goes, once you do one thing than everything else looks bad. So next we had Walnut Ridge Nursery come by and tear out all the old landscape and replace all the plants and put new stone around the planting beds.

If that wasn't enough we then had to replace the sign and had the landscape replaced around it.

The work is never done and you can always find things to fix. We are very proud of all the updates and if you get a chance stop by and say hello.

Remember that money spent with your local businesses help them spend money in the community. Don't order flowers from those out of town guys who don't support our local economy. Spend your money with the real local family owned businesses.

Poinsettia tips

The Poinsettia is a beautiful plant to have in the home or office this time of year. We have a whole store full of every size starting at $25 and going up to $50. All our plants are grown right here in Louisville. Many shops use a cheaper plant that comes from the greenhouses in Canada. These plants are not the quality or do they have the beauty of the local grown plants. The local grown ones are in our store in less than an hour, fresh from the greenhouse. The other shops receive theirs from trucks in boxes that take up to a week for shipping. With our plants we are keeping our money right here in Louisville where it belongs.

The Poinsettia needs a little special care to do well for you. They are tropical plants and love humidity. Provide this by placing the pots on the top of pebbles or broken pottery in water filled saucers. Do not allow the pots to touch the water and keep water in the saucer at all times. As the front page says on our web site "Love is in the Air". Valentine's day is just around the corner and we are working hard to be ready for all those orders. This year Valentine's day falls on a Sunday so plan ahead. Decide when you want your flowers delivered. Traditionally Friday will be our busiest day for deliveries so order early.

I would also like to take some time to talk about the care of roses. They should have a good red color with dark green foliage. The head of the rose should be firm. They should stand up straight on their own and not be bent at the neck.

Taking care of the roses after delivery is a must. Keep them in a cool location and do not put them on top of any appliance that puts off heat. Check your vase for water daily and keep it full to the top. If the water starts to look dirty change the water at once. A good quality rose like the ones purchased at your local retail florist should last 7 to 14 days.

Nothing says "I Love You" like roses delivered from Schmitt's. Fresh Flower Care

Today we will do a little education on flower care. A cut flower is a living organism in delicate balance with the surrounding environment. Change in temperature, humidity and other factors can alter this balance leading to an untimely death. Furthermore, flower structure is a complex mix of vessels, leaves and petals which must be handled with care.

Flowers are temperature sensitive! After harvest, living processes inside the flower are temperature sensitive. When temperatures become too high, food is used up too fast and water is lost faster than it is replaced.

Flowers are sensitive to dry air! Normally, a cut flower actually "Perspires" by losing water vapor from the surface of the leaves. In dry air, flowers lose water faster than normal which causes them to wilt.

Flowers are Delicate! Petals may bruise, tear or break off; stems can bend and break; leaves can tear, turn brown and break off.

Food is essential for Flower life! The "Food" moves up the stems into the flower where it's converted into energy for keeping the flower alive. When you purchase arranged flowers the water is already treated. When you purchase loose flowers a good florist provides you with the food in dry powder packets.

New Silk Flower arrangements

We spent the day making beautiful silk flower arrangements. The front of the store is full of all types and colors. Many will start at $35 and go up from there. Also in today were the Aloha Orchid candles. If you haven't tried these you really have to get one. They are very popular. Last week we received a new shipment of our wind chimes. These are very reasonably priced and made of high quality material right here in the United States.

Russ Schmitt is the owner and hands on manager of Schmitt's Florist. We are located at 5050 Poplar Level Road in Louisville, Kentucky. Our store has been in the same neighborhood since 1968. Russ who is currently 51 years old has worked in the family business since he was 11 years old. Currently Russ is President of Independent Florists' Association a national floral association for retail florists. He is also President of Derby City Floral Delivery Inc. and has held many offices with many other organizations in the floral industry over his career. Russ works with his wife of 30 years Donna and his son Jonathan who will be a Junior at the University of Louisville this year. He is one of the founding fathers of a program called $5 Buck Friday which sells flowers for $5 every Friday at Schmitt's. The program has been so successful it has been trademarked by a group of florists and is used in floral markets across the United States.

I have spent most of my day today reading the many internet posts about bad service received this Mother's Day when trying to have flowers delivered to Mom. It's sad to say that there are many companies who act like florists but really just take orders and try to forward them on to a real florist to fill and deliver the order. We at Schmitt's do not participate in these programs because it is not in the best interest of our customers. When you use companies like this you are just calling a company who charges you a fee for them to forward your order to a real florist. These companies do not fill or deliver the order. In many cases they charge you up to $15.99 just to take the order. Then they forward the order and take a 20% commission for selling the gift. You will always do better finding a florist in the area you want your flowers delivered and calling them yourself. None of these companies have any clout in any independent run retail florist. Save yourself a bunch of trouble and find a local real florist who really cares about your business.
